DIY Whisper Phones

So, you know those FABulous whisper phones that you can buy at some of our favorite stores???

You know the ones...

Anyway, I want to show you something that I learned, a long time ago, and have used them FOREVER!

They are my version of whisper phones, but cheaper and more durable.

Although, I DID have to go buy a few more because some of mine have grown legs and disappeared....

That's what I get for lending things out to people and not remembering to ask for it back.

Oh well.

At least their students are benefiting, right?! lol

Anyway, I went to one of my favorite stores....

Starts with an "L" and rhymes with grows...lol

Go to their plumbing aisle and find these pipes...

they look weird, but you want these specific ones, because you can actually get more for your money - yay!

I think these are like $2.80 a piece...

Anyway, the smaller pieces come off...

and attach together to make a THIRD whisper phone! So, for less than $6, you get THREE whisper phones!

Even A likes them - haha!

When do I use these???

During small groups, when I send my kids off to finish reading their "book" or during our 15 minutes of silent reading EACH day...I have some kids who REALLY need to work on fluency..or some kids that just CAN NOT read in their heads - giving them these really help them to hear how they sound when they read, and they don't need to read too loud, LOVE them!
(I will be sure to post about it when school is back in session - in fact, I plan on doing a LOT about my guided reading - just for you Brittany, my sweet friend (hehe)!

Do you use them??
How do YOU use whisper phones??

I have used them in the past. I have purchased some and made my own too:)

The kids love them, but at times I find they play more than read with them. Does anyone else have this problem? Maybe it goes back to model, model, model. Perhaps I will add it to the Daily 5 mini-lessons.

I am having a birthday giveaway and would love for you to check it out!

My kids do love them but they try to take them apart and make swords out of them. I have had to take them away a couple of times.

really?? swords? hehe....I've never really had a problem with them...the biggest problem I have is that the kids start reading in their heads even while they are holding the whisper phones..lol

Thanks for the tip! In my student teaching classroom, the kids used them all the time so I really want some for my first classroom, but didn't want to pay all that money! I'll definitely have to check out a hardware store now!

I use them all the time - not until I get a handle on behavior though..so usually the second or third month or school. I had a parent make a class set for me...SO nice. That was 10 years ago and I still have them. Should probably dissinfect those suckers...eh? ;) My kiddos like to blow into them, make silly noises instead of read. That's why I have to wait until they REALLY know I REALLY mean business...because after that- they wouldn't dare. Well, most wouldn't dare...

Okay THANK YOU for showing these... I'm not plumbing savvy nor did I know exactly what to buy. If I asked the hubs I'd get the "You're buying something ELSE for your classroom" look and I really didn't want to see that again so soon lol :) Thanks!!

Heading to the "L" rhymes with grows store soon!!

I use mine during intervention time to practice sight word recognition. Depending on the class. . .I put them in my reading center. I just pinned your post because your way of making them is sooooo much easier. I think this year I'm going to jazz mine up with the colored duct tape I keep seeing around.

Thanks for sharing this money saving tip to make these! I had two last year and it was always a pain because everyone wanted to use them (especially at the beginning of the year.) I am going to make some more.

WOW! Jen, you are a genius! I have never seen these before. What a fabulous idea. I teach middle school now. I still have kids who struggle to read in their heads and need to practice reading aloud for their fluency

These "whisper phones" are magic!

Thanks for sharing!!!! :D

I use mine when revising and editing essays. Both middle school and high school students benefit from this strategy! They become confident more quickly when practicing one to two skill sets at a time.
