reading mini lesson with author's purpose and freebies!

Ok, before I get into the reading lesson, I HAVE to tell you of my morning...
FIRST, I woke up AN HOUR later than I am supposed to...6:15 people!! And this morning I had to take the girls to their babysitter....so I needed to leave by 6:40.
Not only did I need to get myself ready, but I needed to pack A's and my lunch, feed B, and eat something...well, I enlisted hub's help...but you women know that they just don't do it like we do...but whatever. I didn't have time to be picky - I put him in charge of lunches while I was franctically getting myself ready and feeding B.
We're finally ready, and he loads the girls in the car, and as I'm walking out the door, I grab my coffee, and the WHOLE THING SLIPS OUT OF MY HAND!!!! Onto the counter and floor it goes.... and all over me!!! Sooo, now I have to clean the up the mess and change my clothes...meanwhile the girls are already in the car and hubs is gone by now...ahhhhhh!!!!!
No breakfast, no coffee, and I'm stuck behind someone going LESS than the speed limit....ahhhhh!!!
lol. I get to the babysitter's house, and I tell her about my morning and how I'm gonna have to stop at DD to get coffee which will put me even LATER to work, and she turns around and hands me a cup...
siiiiiiiighhhhh...it completely turned my day around. lol. I'm not joking. It took my blood pressure down a few notches for sure! lol

Ok, onto my reading lesson...
(thanks for stickin' with me during my rant)
Today's mini lesson is using reading skills,
but first, I wanted to show you what it looks like in my room during silent reading time.

I personally don't read sitting my kitchen table....I find a comfy spot, right?? So, I let them too...I used to have stuffed animals for them to read with and bean bags, but now with how strict our fire marshalls are, I'm lucky I can have rugs...yeesh!

Today, their reading focus was to figure out their author's purpose. After they read (and I conferenced with a few and was able to move them up a level or two! yay!), they put their book on either entertain or inform.

Ok, so you may seem some discrepencies there on the inform side (the right one). BUT, I tell them, that if they can defend their answer with a reasonable defense, then they win :) So those books are to entertain, BUT they were learning something while they read too...also, the Hooray for Reading Day book is in the middle because even though it is OBVIOUSLY an "enterain" book, he said that the book was also telling ways that you can learn to read.

And now for the freebies....
This first one is the sign I have hanging above my computers for my kids. Whenever I read a book aloud or have a book at a center, they are supposed to take quizzes on them. And since I only have 2 computers (3 if I'm lucky that day - lol), I need them to be faster at typing in the name. So I have them just type in the quiz number....I used to use post it notes on the computers, but they would always fall off. So I have these taped to the wall and laminated so I can use a dry erase marker on them. They still type in the title of their books on all the other books they read, I just do this for the ones that EVERYONE has to take.

This next one they are using with one of their reading centers this week....I left the title blank just in case I want to change the book.

If you grab these, please leave some lovin'. I didn't want to up load to TpT, but I'd love to know if you grabbed them and how you liked them :)

Ok, I am REALLY behind on blog stalking and I feel so bad, but I'm really behind on other things too...there just isn't enough time in my day!! I have SOO much I need to do that I don't get to do everything I want to do. :(

I loved this Jen!! Well, not the part about your awful morning, I am sorry about that! Those kind of mornings are the worst. Especially when the coffee goes---I get panicked! I'm glad things turned out ok.

I enjoyed seeing your kiddos at reading--your room looks awesome!

Your morning sounds so stressful!!!

I used your sticky notes idea today and it went pretty well! For some reason, the first graders TOTALLY jumped on board and had their stickies ready to present at the end while the second graders apparently totally ignored me and had no stickies...... we will do it again tomorrow!! :) Thanks!

Silly girl...did you set your ALARM an hour forward instead of the clock? Bless your babysitter for knowing just what mama needed!

You know, when you're in a hurry, something ALWAYS goes wrong. That's guaranteed! But luckily, someone was able to make your day!!

Thank you for the freebies. I was wanting to come up with a graphic organizer for our St. Patrick's Day books. Can you tell me how the..."Somebody...wanted...but.." works? I keep seeing them everywhere!!

Girl...you are amazing!! I am so glad your morning got turned around before arriving at work. I think we have ALL had those days! After I was late one time, I use to have scary nightmares about it...hahaha

I love your freebies and will be pinning them (-; I know that you feel there is never enough time, but on my end - I don't know how you accomplish what you do...you rock girly!!

I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!!!

Thanks for sharing these. Sorry about the rough morning. A month or two ago, both the other kindergarten teachers were going to be out and there was no sub for one of them. So it was a hectic day and I forgot my coffee at home on my counter. I was so sad.

Somebody (they list the main character/s)
Wanted (what did they want?)
But (this is the problem - and virtually EVERY book has a problem..lol)
So (what did they try to do to solve the problem)
Finally (how was the problem solved or how did the book/story end?)

Hope that helps!
