Beginning Weeks of January

So, we started back to school last week and it's been a whirlwind every since! ha!!

I've been pretty crazy busy (short week, awards, class pictures - that were running late) and so my pictures have been kind of scarce, but I've managed to get a few here and there....

Let me just start off with this picture...

lol. The power in our school went out for about an hour, if not more and we were brought back to the dark ages. lol. Not really. I have a big wall of windows and a door that opens to the outside, so we were pretty well lit. lol. But one of my lovelies had this flashlight in his backpack, so he helped to shed some light on the situation. haha.

OK - let's get back on track here. lol
The first few days we got back, we talked about our goals for the new year.

We just wrote them on our "quick writes" paper.

And since we were going to have Monday off for Martin Luther King Day, we talked about how it's okay to be different. I really like to focus on accepting everyone, not just people of other colors.  Todd Parr's book is one of my favorites to talk about this.

The book class book we wrote comes from Kelley's pack.  My class loves writing class books. Take a look at this post to see more ideas for class books.

Another favorite activity we did comes from Christina, HERE.  We read the book Snow Dream, and we focused on using clues... a lot of inferencing with this activity!

We also used the Snowmen Books to help us with our writing that week. After we read a few of the books, we brainstormed ideas on what they could do with their snowman. Then, we did the planning page and wrote it out as a paragraph.

I really want them to start focusing on topic, details, and closing, so I had them use a crayon to underline their topic (green), details (highlighting the transition words in yellow), and closing (red).

After they finished their writing and illustrating, they did the snowman craft to go along with it. It's a non-tracer craft. They are getting so good with those!

That was the first week.

Our 2nd week back, we moved on to Penguins... We reviewed prepositions (with my stellar chart anchor chart that I forgot to take a picture of), then they did their Penguin Adventure book

It's a freebie! :)

Also - every theme we always start with making our folder for it. We make a header for the folder and then they do a directed drawing for the cover. I always love how different they turn out!

They really make it their own!

This week, of course, we focused on Tacky!

We did some summarizing. The kids said that they thought "Then" worked better, the way we were wording the summary, so we changed it on the form. Sure! Why not? Right?

They took the planning page and turned it into a paragraph writing.

We also compared Tacky to his friends and did a cute craft to go with it!

After reading a few of the books, we did a little character analyzing....

Next week, we'll still be doing penguins, but we're moving to nonfiction!

The kids will be doing their own research on PebbleGo and creating their own book!

I always love watching their first research book come together!

Here's a preview of what's included in the Learning with Penguins unit.

First Week of the New Year

We had our first week (4 day week) back. I didn't do a lot of "fluff" to ease their way back into it....nope. I went in full force, my friends! ha!

Before I get started with our week though. I want to show you what we did the last week before break, so that they were ready to hang in the hallways when we got back from break.

We read the book, Dream Snow, by Eric Carle.  Then they picked an animal that they wanted to do in their writing. I talked about they needed to write about for each line....they aren't very good at coming up with their own clues just yet...but if I give them guidelines, they can do it!  What color hair or skin, how many legs, what kind of tail, where it lives, and what it says.  Then they colored their picture. I gave them an overhead sheet to paint and cover their animal with snow and make snow all over the page (like the book).

I love how they come out!!

You can grab the writing page from Mrs. Bainbridge's blog post {HERE}.

We also made our New Year's Resolution. I just did a "quick write" and had them choose which color they wanted to glue it to. These writing sheets come from my {Winter Writing Pack}.

You can check out {THIS} post to read more about my Writing with Rubrics packs.

We finished the first half of 1st grade!! That's right...90 days have gone by. I will say, the change is SO drastic from day 1 to 90 ...and even more from day 1 to 180! It's seriously crazy. I've taught grades 1-5, and this grade is the one where I see the most growth in my students.

This is my math board, my calendar is right to the right of the weather cards. We go through all of this every morning. It takes about 10 minutes to go over the date, weather, how many days of school, the "plus sign" in the 100s chart...etc. I just {pull sticks} and run through it.

We finished and added in our December page to our {Memory Books}.

I mean...look at the difference in her writing already just since the first week! That's why I love these books... check them out {HERE}.

And I thought I'd show you how were' doing on Individualized Spelling lists we do.  As you can see, everyone is on different words, different lists...but they are moving and grooving!

I pull them back to my back table in small groups to test them. To read more about doing Individualized spelling, check out {THIS} post.

And we started our {Snowman Writing}.  I love the planning page included. They kids are able to really use it and make sense of it. I will come back this week to show you more of the snowman activities we did.

Next week, we're starting my Penguin unit!! I'm so stinkin' excited!!  If you've bought this pack already, make sure you download it again - I've added 40 pages to it! See how I've used this in the past {HERE}.  Check out {THIS} post to see which books I like to use during Penguin week.

Hope your first week back went okay!

Snowmen Activities

Just wanted to let you know of my latest pack!

When I get back in January, I'm going to be spending the first week using the Snowmen books by Caralyn Buehner:

If you have any of my "cat" activity packs (Splat the Cat or Pete the Cat), this pack is a lot like those...I like to keep it similar, so my students become more independent.

Included is:

Story Structure - different versions; INB or whole page!
Summarizing - planning pages and writing pages!
Describing Snowmen - character analysis or actual snowmen
Cause and Effect - can be used for any of the books!
How Does the Character Change?
Compare and Contrast Stories
Evaluation
Sentence Building - unscramble the sentences and write them out (I love using these for centers!)
Writing activities - there are 3 different kinds!!
 - What you would do with your snowmen all year
- how to build a snowman
- or what snowmen do at night
Planning pages; circle/brainstorming map and linear style
Writing - recording pages horizontal and vertical options
Snowman craft!

The craft can be used in a few different ways - just the head, with writing, as a topper, etc...

The craft is a non-tracer craft. I have come to LOVE these kinds of crafts. Give it a whirl! Your kids will become GREAT at it! Plus it really helps with their ability to follow directions and help with their math concepts and spatial sense.

Check it out {HERE}.

I'd love to give a copy of it away!  Comment below with how the weather is where you live...because right now?? We're about mid-high 70s. NOT snowmen friendly weather, AT. ALL.

I will pick a winner on Tuesday Night!
(p.s. For another chance - go to my FACEBOOK page to enter over there!)
