Fun with 2-D Shape Friends

Last week, one of our math concepts was learning about 2-D shapes.

I posted about how I taught in 2nd grade {HERE} last year.  We had some serious fun - using the iPad app, geoboards, making our shape books.  SO much fun!

This year, since I'm in 1st grade now, I took a little bit different approach. We don't need to go into quite as much detail as in 2nd grade, but we still had a lot of fun!  One of my favorite activities we do is to make the shape friends.  When I taught 2nd grade, I had them free-hand draw and cut the shapes (well, with a ruler), but with 1st grade, I printed up templates and made tracers for them. But everything else on the shapes they did themselves. I always love how they come out.

My personal favorite this year is this little "French Hexagon." lol... complete with a speech bubble saying "wee wee!"  We had just done our "Five Little Pumpkins" illustrations from my Pumpkin unit, and she needed to do the same for her shape. I love it!

Candy Math, Geometry, and Phonics Poetry

Happy Sunday! I finally have time to sit and blog again! Whew!

On Friday we did my Candy Heart Math. I always forget how long this takes...lol. But I always love how it incorporates so much math!

What you don't see is the extension activities on the other side - the writing about the data and the addition or multiplication of the numbers.

I've also turned them into books!

We've also been working in our Polygon books (found in my 2-D Geometry pack)

This is the app we've been using all week to help us with our 2-D shapes unit....click on the picture to watch the video of it! The app is just called Geoboard. I actually used this during one of my observations from my principal! She really liked it...the only thing I wish was that EACH kid had an iPad to do it all together.

Funny story (real quick)!

 I invited my principal to come do an observation of my lesson during this day. So she was in there and the OT lady came to get one of my students and when she opened up the door the wind was so strong it blew everything that was hanging from my ceilings down including the ropes with clothes pins with stuff hanging from them. Yep. It's swung down and hit my principal in the head. Awesome lol. We all had a good laugh, at least - haha!

Then, I saw Amy's post about her shape shifting friends, and did an impromptu lesson. They did their shapes free-handed and they turned out so cute!!

That blue hexagon is my favorite - because it's not a traditional hexagon. Thinking out of the box!

 

We've also been working on /ar/ and /or/ sounds this week....one of my new favorite activities in my phonics packs is the "What's the Picture Worth?" page. It really makes them think!!

I also wanted to show you what I do with phonics poetry (again). I've posted about my week-long poetry activities {HERE}, but I want to show you how I've kind of tweaked it since then. 

In addition to fluency and highlighting the phonics words, we also write out the words (more spelling practice!) and in addition to illustrating, they have LABEL the pictures with AT LEAST 3 of the words from the word list that they wrote out!  Here are some examples from last week's poems.

Where do I get my phonics poems??? I get them from THIS book. I just retype them so that the words aren't bolded and there isn't a picture already for them to see.  They glue it into their poetry spiral to keep all year long to go back and revisit!

Ok....and one more picture. This was me the other night. I finished my workout and sat down to laminate and cut centers and word cards (from my phonics packs) for the week.  lol. Problems of a teacher! How many of you look like this when you get in your grooeve!? haha!

My plans for Spring week - part 2!

Hey friends!!

This week's visual plans....well....aren't really visual. lol

I mean, they are - because I'm using a lot of visual aids (I'm a visual kind of person...I need pictures.)

(hence all the pictures I'm always taking).

ALTHOUGH, I've been really slacking lately with my classroom pictures. This week was bad because we only got like halfway through ALL my activities...I probably would've finished them on Friday, but I took the day off, unexpectedly, on Friday, to spend with the birthday boy.

My "old man." ha!!

So, that brings me to this week's plans. I'm really not sure where to start planning because I'm not really sure where my sub ended on Friday. AND I'm having a sub on Monday - because I'm giving the FCAT to a 6th grader. Just one. Because he broke his writing arm. So I have to bubble in his test for him - and write out his math for him....there is ABSOLUTELY no way I can even pretend to cheat. I don't think I could do 6th grade math anyway - isn't that sad!? haha!

SO, I have to have a sub on Monday and I don't know who that is, and YES, it depends on who the sub is as to what I have them do. There are 3 different ladies that I trust my class and regular plans with. BUT, I don't know if I'm getting any of them. 

BUT, I will tell you what I will be doing eventually....maybe....possibly. 

I DO know that next week is a review week for spelling - so they'll be doing my Spelling Tic Tac Toe (FREEBIE)

AND we still have to finish our Rainbow Similes (FREEBIE)

AND we have to finish our Scholastic News on our Insects.

AND for math, we're going to be finishing up some of my 2-D Geometry...

That's all left over from last week's plans....

This week, I'm starting up with my Spring Time Measurement (I posted it last night! If you follow my FB page, you saw that it's been on sale - you still have some time to get it until Sunday night!)

And we'll be doing a few more activities from my Spring Time centers

Another fun math activity I want to do (probably on Friday) is Hadar's Ladybug Family. Seriously - this is when I really remember "loving" her!

Our school participated in the Relay for Life, it's theme was "A World Without Cancer." We were India! We raised enough money for Silver Status!!

And JUST to prove my hubs DOES exsist...lol

And a day at the duck pond with the fam...
