Bees, pancakes, and wedges!

NO, not WEDGIES...lol!

I'm back - yes, the NEXT day! I know. It's hard to believe. But, I wanted to show you what we did last week. Some of the things anyway. I'm kind of a slacker on taking pictures lately. It's hard to get out of my small groups to walk around....but that's a good reason to be a slacker, right!? ha!

First up  - our Scholastic News...I LOVE doing these things!

We worked on Main Idea and Details with our article on bees.  I quickly made beehive tracers, they traced, wrote out the main idea and details, then traced with marker and colored! Some even added their own illustration details - they turned out so cute!

Then, we also did my Laura Numeroff Pack

(I'm really bummed at the lack of pictures of the activities we did...)

These are our Sentence Imitations. Whatever I put in my sentence, they had to put in theirs - and they had create their own...so on the top one, their sentences had to have a sight word (for the week), a -ge or -dge word (spelling rule for the week), and a contraction. We use the characters and "happenings" from our stories from the week - reading and writing are reciprocal!

 We also tied in - measurement, steps in a process (forgot to take a picture of their how-to-steps!!! blarg!), AND a graphing activity - TONS of stuff going on here.

They only got 1 choice - plain, butter, syrup, fruit, or jam....

I gave them little pancakes to draw their favorite toppings on and they graphed them.

Some fun with Laura Numeroff!

ok, so I'm a TOTAL slacker....

I did NOT do the visual plans for this week :( But I feel like I still need to show you some things that we'll be doing. I feel bad....I'm sorry. lol. We've had a jammed packed family weekend though.... garage sale-ing, hours at Hobby Lobby... AND, just LOOK at what hubs scored for me last night at an auction!!

aw -yeah!!  for only $10!! What?! 

Anyway...today is massive grocery shopping day and THEN I'll be doing some major planning, so maybe I'll be back tomorrow with my visual plans.

This week, we're switching gears! I'll be doing my Laura Numeroff unit, because we'll be doing all kinds of "If You Give a....." books

(did I forget any?! lol)

Cupcake Fractions

So this week, we've been hitting hard core our author of the month, Laura Numeroff. (It's also Mo Willems, and I'll show y'all that stuff another time!)

We've been reading all her "circle books" this week as a basis for our reading, writing, and math lessons.
Yesterday we read:

(which actually goes really well with our phonics skill this week - hard and soft G and C)

And did cupcake fractions!!

They traced out the frosting and bottom, and then I used a hole puncher and punched out a LOT of holes...I had A TON left over because I'm SO horrible at estimating! haha!! Really... truly...just awful at estimating! lol

I didn't have the tracers with me (I left them at school), so I quickly drew something up for y'all.

It's not perfect, but it'll get ya the tracers you need! ha! I left the writing page blank so you younger grades can just have the kiddos count the sprinkles - obviously you can have them put as many as you want them to!

Finally! Laura Numeroff Unit

Oh my land!!

I'm FINALLY finished AND uploaded...You guys seriously have no idea how long it's taken me to upload this!!! I think it's taking longer to upload than it did to make them!!!

well, it's not really finished...but I think I've added enough. Ha!!

I have some craftivities I wanted to add, but I think I'll do those separately.

This has been my "baby" for the last 5 days...it's been hard to get her finished with such beautiful beach days and potty training my 2 year old (having to run to the bathroom for EVERY false alarm is giving me my cardio! lol).

Remember how I posted the Tic Tac Toe for Laura Numeroff the other day?? (If not, it's in my TpT for free!)

Well, here are the activities/centers I made to go along with my unit study.

I spend all month on a particular author, but I really hit him/her hard for one good solid week.

There are TWELVE different centers and activities that you can use with Laura Numeroff's circle stories.

Spring Cookies and April's Author Study- Laura Numeroff

Since it's Spring, A and I made my bird's nest cookies.

 

I'm sure you've seen them before, but just in case you haven't...

You need only 4 things to make these:

1/2 bag of choc chips

1/2 bag of butterscotch chips

3/4 bag of chow mein noodles

 

and peanut M&Ms or the robin's eggs Whoppers

Melt the two chips, stir in the noodles, then scoop them onto wax paper. Make a little dent and put in your eggs.

Refigerate.

Done!!

Easy peasy, right??

Now onto school stuff.....

Each month, I do an author study with my students. Along with integrated math, writing, and reading activities, my students complete this Tic Tac Toe, taking A.R. quizzes. Do you remember the Dr. Seuss one I posted for March??

There are three different versions - Accelerated Reader, Reading Counts, and for those schools who don't have either, there is a Parent Signature page. 

I'm in the midst of creating/updating my unit for her author study...I'm taking what I already do, jazz it up with clip art (my new addiction) and putting it all in one file - well, I'll separate it like I always do, but you get my drift.

So far, there are SIX math centers:

I don't know though, we are having BE-A-UUUUUU-TEE-Ful beach weather :)
