Label It and Write About It!

I have had a few people tell me that they want the "Label It" center from my monthly CCS center packs in EVERY month...they really like them!

So, I've decided to make MONTHLY Label It Packs! These will be separate from what is included in my monthly CCS center packs. I actually REALLY like these because they are great vocabulary words for writing. It gives their brain a place to start...some ideas.

My plan was just to make one big pack with all the months in it. But then, when I got started, I realized that just one month was almost 100 pages! The ideas for pictures just kept coming....and I had to make myself stop, or I could have gone even further!

So, here's what I came up with for August. Now, I know that some of you don't go back to school in August, or if you do, it might be the end of August, but you could still use this for Back To School themes. I guess that would have been a better title "Back to School" but then that would have messed up with with my need for everything to be uniform...haha!

In August, the themes are "Back to School" and "Getting to Know You" so all of the pictures correspond with those themes.  There are 11 pictures included...

There are 4 versions of each picture... A color one (mainly for teacher purposes), one that is JUST labeling, then 2 versions of the "caption" picture (regular lines and writing lines).

There are also 4 versions of each writing page. This layout will be the same for ALL of the months.

I have included word banks on each page so that it's easier for the students to know how to spell THOSE words. Even the writing pages have the word banks, which I love because that way, you could use JUST the writing pages for a writing activity and NOT the pictures pages. There are so many different ways you could use these activities!

Here are some examples of how you could have them do them in your class.

This one is JUST labeling and coloring:

This one is labeling, coloring and then adding a written aspect to it. This would obviously be for your more experienced writers. I like to have the kids "highlight" the words from the pictures in their writing with a light colored crayon (yellow, light green, light orange, or pink). For even MORE writing, there is a FULL PAGE that you could use!

Another option you could do is a lesser version of the written version. This one I like to do. I have the students label the picture and color it... but THEN they have to add in a scene. This is a scene of the girl walking to school. This gets them to think about settings and such.  Then, under the picture, they have to write a "caption" for the picture. Again, I like for them to highlight the words they use.

Now some of the words they want to use won't be in the word bank. But that's when I tell them to get out their Spelling Journals

I have a "Category" section and just about about every theme you can think of is in there...and if it's not? Then we write it in! They have their own personal word walls whenever they need them! You can check out my post on them HERE.

You can check out my Label It! activity packs in both of my shops:

AND, since I haven't blogged about them since I posted them back in June, I've even had time to finish September's pack!

There are 13 pictures included in this month's pack... and the same kind of layout as August's pack. Here are the pictures included in September:

Monday highlights

Today was actually a pretty good Monday....nothing major to write home about....my mom went back to Colorado, so boooooo on that! But other than that, it was a pretty good day.

Just a few pictures today to show you some highlights of my day.

We got our school pictures.....here's mine. Not my favorite one, but not my worst. My mom says I actually look like a teacher in this one though, whatever THAT means. ha!!

I am LOVING my little bulletin board!  (and by little, I DO mean little...)
It's donning Hadar's Pumpkin Glyphs and the Fall tree, which I LOOOOVE that our art teacher did in art with my kiddos!  Our pumpkin seed plants are also hanging out there...waiting to sprout!

Today was the start of a new number for our Numbers Every Day folders.  Check out that clue that I gave them to figure out the number for the week!! I had some rockstars in my class who got it! woo!

One of my kids made me laugh so hard today...I have 2 listening centers - one is on a CD player and the other one (this week) is on the tape player....I stood behind this little girl for about a minute and watched her, just staring at it. Then she finally looks up at me and goes "Umm....Mrs. Ross.....how do you work this thing?!?!" in the most sweetest, innocent sound you could ever hear...it just cracked me up!  Ancient technology at its finest, right!?

And one last picture....Mondays we start in on our vocabulary words for the week (we also have others, but these are the ones we focus on using in our speaking and writing)....the kids LOVE doing our vocabulary journals! Check them out in {THIS} post.

Well, I'm off to fall asleep watching the Kelly and Michael show....anyone else watch that?! I love it! The only daytime show that I have to record! I just love Michael's personality and I'm somewhat in awe of Kelly...lol...I want to be like her when I grow up!

Vocabulary Journals in the Works!

We finally started our Vocabulary Journal today!!

I just got our Vocabulary Journals back from the print shop copied, bound, and ready to use!

So today, while working our Habitat For Sale unit, we were planning our writing sheet, and stumbled across a word for our vocabulary journals! They are going to have to use this word in their writing, so it was a word I really wanted to make sure that they knew. What I like about my journals is that since words are really cross-curricular, it's a free-for-all journal, that way they can use the journals in any subject area, just like our phonics dictionaries.

I want them to color the words with their yellow crayon to highlight the words so they stand out. (I don't have them use a real highlighter because I don't want it to bleed through.

And did you see Stephanie's blogpost on how she uses it?? It's great! Go check it out! She shows you how she uses it with her "Word of the Day."

Alphabet and Vocabulary Journals

I really like the interactive, student-created notebook and journals. You know that I have my Hands-On Dictionary and Phonics Notebook....

Well, I just finished two more notebooks...

The first one I did was an Alphabet Journal

If you follow my Instagram, then you saw this picture

A was all excited to be my model for the Alphabet Journal.

I like to bind the journal together, but you can glue the cover to a the front of a 3-pronged folder.

Inside are two pages practice sheets for the alphabet.

*Tip - laminated them so the students can practice with dry erase markers!

Check it out!

And then the other one I finished is a Vocabulary Journal.

I set it up the same way, with my binding machine.

For ease of flipping through the pages, I put the letters in stars at the top of the pages.

Here's what it looks like when it's finished...

The "Rate it!" is what they do AFTER they finish the entry on the word. They are rating how well they feel THEY know the word, and how comfortable they are using it.

Check it out!

Now....I've been saying this, but now I PROMISE the next thing on my list is the 3rd Grade Spelling Throughout the Year!
