Sentence Imitation - for Any Grade!

A few years ago, the district I work in did an inservice for our writing coaches called "Sentence Imitation." Our writing coach at my old school was awesome. She came back and did some PD on it. I took it back and used it in my room. Ever since then, I have been a firm believer in it!

I see Sentence Imitation as a child who is learning to talk. They imitate what you say to learn how to speak, right? So kids learning to write would have the same learning, right?

Here are some examples of what I've been doing the last week or so.

I write a sentence on the chart paper. Then I ask, "What do you notice about my sentence?"

The first two things are always capital letter for the first word and a punctuation at the end. Good. I want them to say that every time. Hopefully it'll ingrain in those students' head that need it! ha!

Then I start guiding them in the direction that I want them go... In this one, I wanted them to find the proper nouns.  I also wanted to teach them about Compound Sentences. So I underlined  the "and" and then did my little mini lesson on it.

The next day, I wrote another compound sentence, and they found it on their own!  You will find that they LOVE to find word wall words! Depending on the sentence, I'll label it for them, but sometimes they go a little crazy with them.

It was this day that I wanted them to also write their OWN compound sentence and I also wanted it to have at least one proper noun.  We had some circle maps about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington on the wall, so I told them they could use those to guide their writing.

You will see that I'm VERY picky about spelling and letter formation.   Yes, this is my first grader writing like this...and it's a boy! I love it. I tell them, if it's not in their best writing and the words are not spelled correctly, then they will rewrite it. Some don't believe me, but after the first time, they finally see that I'm serious.

This particular student actually has a really hard time taking his time to copy from me correctly on a normal basis, but ever since I've started sentence imitation, he's done so much better!

Today they were excited that one of the words had our phonics skill in it (freedom), so we had to label that one!

Here are some other examples of when I taught 2nd grade, just so you can see the difference...

In the beginning, it takes a little bit more time to get them used to doing it.  But after a few days, they are really quick at it! And it becomes a game to them really.

I do this about 3 times a week and then in our main writing for the week I have put the skills that we've been practicing in their writing.   It really works! I promise. If you can stick with these little mini lessons, they will do such good for your kids' writing!

You don't really need a guide for this. I just use whatever grammar skill we need to work on and somehow make that mix with whatever we've been studying and reading about. I usually make the sentences up as we sit down to do the activity.

You can do this for any grade! You can make the sentences as easy or as difficult as you need them to be! Kinders can do it, all the way up to 3rd or 4th grade!

A Penguin Preposition Book Freebie!

I had a good response to my Spider Preposition book that I shared in my Spider post {HERE}. And I, personally don't take a week to teach preposition, but I do know that since they are in our standards, they need to be "mastered."  So I just do some activities here and there. I mean, The kids usually get them. My Autumn even gets prepositions (what the word means... not the ability to point out a "preposition" by any means. lol). So since I teach Penguins in January, I thought why not do another preposition book?

This one is set up a little differently because the pictures are already in the book, the students just have to add to the book. They have to read the question and figure out where the preposition is telling them to do something. I like to have my kids highlight (with a crayon) the preposition so that I know they can identify it. Then they illustrate the answer and then write the answer on the lines. I like to have them highlight the preposition in their answer too, so that they can make sure they put it in there.

The answers can be written in different ways - whatever suits the needs of your students.

I had Autumn do this and she drew bats. Of course she can't write, so I just wrote it for her. But she knew where to draw it, so that's what I wanted to know with her!

You can have them write more simple sentences like this, if this is where your students are at with their writing.

More Robert Munsch, Geometry, and reading mini-lessons

Ok, so yesterday when I told you how CRAZY this week had been? It's much better now. I had to call about FIVE parents yesterday to let them know their kids were BEYOND crazy! And I was LOVING today. I actually wrote a lot of "Love Notes" to their parents today letting them know that they had a MUCH better day. It's amazing how excited kids get over love notes like that.

I had one kid standing in line to get his "Thursday" folder that saw a kid in front of him getting a note in his folder. Then it was his turn. "Hey, I want a note too!" Wellll.... when you stop faking that you're sick and actually do the work I give you to do, then I'll write you one too!

Yeah... I THINK that might have done the trick. He got this big ole smile on his face. we will see how he is tomorrow. But I have hope.

This week, we are wrapping up my Robert Munsch unit. I love doing Robert Munsch, because I don't actually have to read. I do all the listening to the stories on his website. He is a PHENOMENAL reader! By the second time that we read a book, the kids are saying the words like he does - it is hysterical! And when they talk for the rest of the day, they'll try to sound like him. I LOVE it! Click the pic to check out his site.

Last week, we did Aaron's Hair.

This week, we've been focusing on Alligator Baby. Super cute story!

So they did a SWBSF...on their own this time!

I did go over with them after they wrote out the planning sheet, we conferenced one-on-one.

Then, they wrote it out in a paragraph...again, on their own. BUT, I did conference with them - because tomorrow is their test and they have to be able to do it ON THEIR OWN without any help from me. The motivator to get their centers finished this week was so that they could do Jessica's Alligator craft (from her Animals A to Z pack - LOVE it!). I think they turned out SUPER cute!
(The story summarizer is mine though)

In math, it was a shift in gears today...

Geometry!

I noticed I don't really have anything to "share" with you in geometry (YET - lol), BUT, the kids LOVE when we bust out the geoboards!

Today, it was all about QUADRILATERALS.

I wanted them to see that a quadrilateral was ANY 4-sided shape...as long as the sides were straight. They tried making fun shapes and curves and such. Nope. Sorry. Straight Lines are the only ones invited to our party. lol

Look at them going to town!

And then they headed off to do their math centers. This one is the Money Pot

And the measurement is from the Pot O' Gold Math centers.
They did both customary and non-standard, to get practice with both.

And, I wanted to show you one of my favorite ways to teach grammar...aside from my sentence imitation writings. Book searches during silent reading time.

Do you do a daily silent reading time? We do. EVERY day, they read for 15 minutes. Same time, every day. Right after lunch (we have recess in the morning between reading and math). And no, I don't do the Daily 5. I don't like them to read silently in a center...because I can't keep my eye on them and with the commotion of the other centers, how could they focus!? SO, we just ALL do it every day at the same time. I LOVE it.

I give them a "skill" to be looking for while they are reading. After their time is up, I'll call on a few kids to share. Today I had a few kids that wanted to give me words that ended with -ed but weren't really suffixes. But I'm glad that they tried to give me those, because then I was able to do a quick mini lesson. AND we talked about doubling consonants (forgetting) and dropping e's to add -ing (sharing), so the lesson sometimes leads to other lessons, ALL without having a workbook page! woo! (did that sound like a paid-for commercial...lol)

Tomorrow is Friday, my friends! Hope it's a good one!

Word Hunt Freebie!

Today, we had early release....

it's only an hour early.

But hey, I'll take it!

Because that's an hour more that we can sit around and talk with our teammates and become better friends collaborate with our team.  We planned - I promise.

In fact, I'm pretty much planned up for next week!  I have SOOOO much stuff for this time of year that it is SOOOO hard to decide which ones I want to do...

And even when I DO decide what I want to do, I come up with activities on the spur of the moment and don't get to do what I actually had planned....ha!

Case in point...

Yesterday's activity was NOT in my original plans.

I just kind of made it up.

Their morning work when they came in was to walk around the room and find some verbs and write them down.

Now, some of my friends and I were having a debate on what to call this.

Do you call it "Read the Room" or do you call it "Write the Room?"

I don't know.

So I changed it to say "Word Hunt" - haha!

You can click the pic to get the freebie - there is one that says verbs, and one that just has a line so you can print it up and just write one the line what you want them to find.

NOTE - I've also had them go on a word hunt while they are reading....

They use post it notes to find skills (this one was the /ou/ sound)...
Check out THIS post to read more that one...I did a whole week series on it.

Anyway, then we sorted the verbs into a tree map - past or present.

Then they had to pick one verb from each branch of the tree map and write a sentence on a light bulb.
(I just quick drew it up and cut some out for them)

Then we made a present tree and a past tree.

Go see more ideas for grammar activities at Lori's Linky!

Also - one of my new favorite things to do is the Estimation Station.

I first saw the post on Denise's blog (LOVE her!)

and then Reagan did it too (I'm a regular stalker of hers...)

I realized how much the DON'T know how to estimate...so hopefully this will help!
I'm super excited about it!

I will be back tomorrow to show you some of the FUN stuff that I grabbed during the sale!!

Bats, Sentence Imitation, and Ode to my bloggy-girls!

It's BAT WEEK!!!

(Graphic - Melonheadz)

My kids are LOVING bats!!

They loved spiders too...

It's amazing how interested in these things kids are.

I love that they are loving what I'm teaching!

(my kids LOVE when I use the chalkboard - haha!)

To start with, we did a Circle Map (Thinking Maps) and divided it into two parts.
The top part is going to be everything that we already know,
and the bottom is what we learned.

*Notice we already have a misconception...which is good!!

First, we started with Stellaluna....

I mean, what other book would I start with??

THEN, I used Bats, but Gail Gibbons...

This is just the first of the Non-fiction books I will be using

So, today, we compared how these two BOOKS are alike.

Ummm....

Can I tell you??  That is some hard stuff for them!!

The kept wanting to tell me about the "characters" in the books...

I think I know what we will be doing a lot more of...

comparing non-fiction and fiction books.

We've been doing some of the bat centers from my bat unit this week...

I HAVE to remember to take pictures during centers, but it's sooo hard since I'm working with small groups - haha!

Go check it out!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wanted to share with you something that I have learned from our resource teachers at our school.
This is a district made thing...
and it's something I actually like!!
SENTENCE IMITATION
ok...
so don't kill me here.
BUT,
You know those D.O.L thingies that WE ALL do??
You know.
find what is rong with this sentence and phix it
type things??
Yeah...I did them ALL THE TIME too!
WELL,
I am IN LOVE WITH THIS!!!!
Our district has given us a book with these sentences that come from our reading series (again, I don't use the reading series, so I just find sentences in the books that we read).
But you do one sentence a day.
Then, with the students you talk about...
"what do you notice about this sentence?"
And let me tell you...
grammar and phonics and writing lessons, ALL IN ONE!!!
And they DO notice!!
I just make the sentences match what we are working on in class...
nouns and verbs (spiders sentence)...we also worked on commas in a series.
Below, we've started our bat books, so I'm using those sentences.....
plural nouns, past tense, i_e words, AND I've put in some science with the baby bats called a pup sentence.
here are some student examples...
Today, our sentence came from Stellaluna...
our phonic's skill this week is blends, s-blends actually,
BUT...they even found those blends!! I was SO excited!!
Seriously - I love this! And it can work for ANY and EVERY grade level!!!
The next step?
Is for THE STUDENTS to be able to write a sentence that imitates the skills they find in the one I write.  We'll start that next week, I think.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You remember when I showed you our currently from Farley that we do in class each month??

(go HERE to check them out!)

WELLLLL....

I can't leave out my girl, Reagan's monthly activity we do!!

TADA!!

It our October Geometric quilt!!

This one was a doosy - I don't tell them how to get to the shape...they all start with squares and have to get to the right size and shape...

after a while, I showed a few though...

(go HERE to check them out!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LAST, but not least!
I am SOOOOOO stinkin' proud of my girls Farley and Reagan for getting their workout on and striving to become healthier!!!
Take a look (HERE) at how AWESOME Farley is lookin'!!!
And HERE, Reagan tells us how much she LOVES burpees!!
lol - yeah...right...like anyone could love burpees!
so, I have to show you...here I am in all my glory...
We are doing PLANKS with side leg "lifts" ON A BENCH!!!
haha!!
I was SOOO proud of myself!!
A) for not falling
B) for having that much core strength to be so straight like that!!
I LOVE going to bootcamp after school!!
yes, we do it outside...
in Florida...
but it's SOOO worth it!!
It was a long post - sorry!!! But if you made it this far - THANKS for stickin' around!!
LOVES to ya!!
