So, NO, I do not use the kids' bathrooms. I will gladly hold it or walk the extra 100 yards to the adult bathroom, which usually has been blown up (yes, I said blown up...and then sprayed so that you literally choke when you walk in). I have a total public bathroom phobia. It was only after I had my daughter and the wonderful toll that pregnancy and delivery take on your body did I have to force myself to start using public bathrooms. Hehe :) Ahhh...the joys of teaching little children :) Happy Friday, friend!

Haley
Following Optimism in 2nd GradeOwls and Lessons, Etc.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08957640327130279528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489683621680725091.post-72688804641707182532012-04-13T21:57:19.549-04:002012-04-13T21:57:19.549-04:00Poo on the bathroom floor? I was walking my class back from lunch a few weeks ago and there was a huge one on the floor right outside my classroom. The children and I all saw it at the same time. I refused to believe it was poo and got close enough to rule out a Baby Ruth Bar. Think Caddyshack! Sadly, it was not a Baby Ruth Bar!

Lori (luvyorkies@gmail.com)
Teaching With Love and LaughterLori Rosenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07152898068250018045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489683621680725091.post-12211087112877497232012-04-13T21:49:09.942-04:002012-04-13T21:49:09.942-04:00You are too cute!! This year, well, it really didn't matter either way...hehehe

If the child was in 1st or above, it is very sad to say that children who do this are often in a situation at home that they are stressed about and have no control over it (divorce, family feud's, extended family tension...you get it), they have a real problem with bowels, or they are being abused. I hope that child is not being abused.

Even though the idea of that happening is grosser than gross, it is so important not to shame the child, but to try spending some time talking to understand what was going on. It could be even as simple as the child was doing something that they liked in class and they didn't want to have to take the time to use the restroom and chose to wait too long. Most times, it is not that simple...sigh...

I hope that little girl or boy gets some time to talk and gets some love (-;

I am very good at reading behavior and recognizing problems. It is actually a gift that I am not so thankful for - because I tend to connect to these kids like they were my own. I have had a few who had gone through some horrific things and no one had known.

One of my 7th grade students was getting into a lot of trouble and was caught stealing food. In my mind, the first thing I would think of would be to ask the child if they had food at home...yes??? Or am I the only one?? He was suspended from school!! I understand that stealing is very wrong, but he was caught stealing food from the cafeteria, not another student and not even junk food. It was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich...to me...that is a red flag!

I spoke to him that day. He had been given a ton of lectures and his mother was mortified on the phone. The student broke down and told me that him and his mom were homeless and that they were living in a friends garage. I almost broke down in tears!!! This boy was always good in my class and was so excited to learn even though he struggled in reading - I never thought for even a second that he would ever get himself into trouble. He had been given after school detention the week before for not paying attention in class and withdrew from his friends quite a bit.

I couldn't understand why no one noticed anything all this time...I felt so bad for not recognizing the problem earlier! We got the boy and his mom some help, but my point is that kids often act out in very strange ways when they are under a tremendous amount of stress over something they can't control...

I know...I am a softy!! Although, I would have not been able to clean up the poo for sure..hehe I also can't stand vomit - the sound, the smell or even peeking at it...puts me in gag mode!! Gross...hahaha

Hope I didn't bum you out...LOL!

Michelle The 3AM TeacherMichelle Tsivgadellishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09327578199614794262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489683621680725091.post-90912568902711624672012-04-13T21:35:53.512-04:002012-04-13T21:35:53.512-04:00oh boy, I can handle blood and vomit and all that ...oh boy, I can handle blood and vomit and all that lovely stuff but NOT NOT NOT the other!!!

I LOVE that your girl said that--how funny.
