Adding Woes, Habitats, and a Freebie!

So this week, we're still review adding 2-digit numbers, without regrouping

and then we're headed to subtracting 2-digit numbers without regrouping...
Now...I have to tell you...

this is really hard for a lot of our kids...

yes...teaching VERTICAL addition is the EASIEST thing to do...
because, well, that's what we use in REAL life, right?
I mean...
I do...

BUT, our district's math test that we give, ask them to do them horizontally AND give the strategy - ahh!

soo...we've been practicing adding tens this week for centers - and we'll continue with these centers next week too...

BUT, we'll add in some subtracting 2- Digit numbers in there too, probably...

OH BOY! lol

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
speaking of 2-digit adding...
I have some kids that are seriously struggling with it...
because they JUST DON'T get place value!!
I've tried manipulatives...
I've tried 100s charts...
I've tried touch math..
and then one day, I'm not sure why, but I just labeled the tens and ones like this....
and by golly, they get it!!!
In fact, you should have SEEN one of my girls' eyes today...
she was SOOOO excited that she could FINALLY get the right answer!!
And THAT, my friends, is why I'm a teacher - because of THOSE little moments...
So, I made a little diddy that you can use that already has them labeled if you want...
click the pic to download...it's a freebie!
I hope it helps some of your struggling students too!
In addition to my Adding Tens centers (heehe - get it...in ADDITION to - badabum!)
We've been using Susan's Addition with 3 addends...
I really like this set in the pack because it's working math, phonics, AND following directions - ding ding ding!!
Following Directions...
SUPER hard for my kdis!!
And this is what I'm doing with my small groups this week -
They have to find the 3rd addend, which is missing to answer the math problem...
Can I tell you how much I love these??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You saw my post yesterday on my students' planning sheet for their habitat that's for sale...

Well, today, we some finished products!!

Check out the descriptions!

Great use of inferencing, knowledge of habitats, and not to mention this is such a higher level activity for them to do! They LOVE it...

Also - yesterday I showed you my Exemplar Sentence that I got from our Story...

So today - they wrote their own sentences...

Go to THIS post to read more about Sentence Imitation!

I didn't realize how AWESOME my students were getting at writing students until I got a new student today who has not been exposed to doing these Imitation Sentence activities.

Now...

If I could JUST get them to write in a paragraph knowing where to end a sentence and start a new one...ahhh!!! lol

ONE

LAST

THING...

LOOK what we got to watch happen today!!!

isn't the baby chick sooo cute???

(do you like how I tried positioning the letters so that you couldn't see the NASTINESS that is my nails?? haha!)

I cant' wait to show you a surprise....BUT, I'm not going to tell you right now, JUST in case it doesn't happen...

Yes, I realize that you are saying - why aren't you doing these in the spring like everyone else??

well....

because our district has given us a pacing guide and in that pacing guide it tells us that Life Cycles are in the first 9 weeks...

Funny...

I think weather should be...

but...

I'm what do I know???

Ok - so I must go catch up on blog stalking and dvr watching - LATERS!

Habitats and oops!

HAPPY full moon after a SURPRISE 3-day weekend because of Tropical Storm Sandy MONDAY!!!

lol...yes

It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...

although..

I'm praying for all the NE people!! Darn storms.

anyways...

So you saw my post yesterday that showed some of the Habitat lessons we did...

Well, today we started working on describing our habitats.

This is what I LOVE about this activity!

Not only are we talking about habitats and what each habitat has, but we were discussing predators and prey, camouflage, practicing our adjectives....

Then the kids started making their own webs to describe whatever animal's habitat they wanted...

They were working on their sloppy copies today too, so hopefully, I'll have some finished products to show you tomorrow!

And I've had a lot of questions on the sentence imitation... It's not a book you can get anywhere...
The county I work in made it to correlate with our Treasures stories in our Reading series.

I don't use the book since I don't use the stories, BUT I really do like the idea, so I DO use it in whatever story we are reading that day or week....

We've been hitting hard on possessive and adjectives. I couldn't find a sentence in our book that had both of those in there, so I made one that COULD have been in our book...

Tomorrow, I'll take a picture of THEIR sentences they make up. They're getting really good at it!!

Oh...

OOPS!

My kids found a mistake today on the Frankie Freebie that was in my plans...

ONE stinkin' question needed to be changed...

so....if you downloaded it yesterday, go back and download it again...

And I leave you with my costume this year....

All 3 of us girls were ballerinas - which is ironic since I played sports growing up all through high school...and I was in the band...lol (yes...I'm a band geek and PROUD OF IT! haha!)

Election Week - Hodgepodge Visual Plans

Hey Y'all!!

Here are THIS week's lesson plans...

(remember to download the lesson plans, and then click the pictures in the PDF and it'll take you to the product - freebie or TpT - link!)

(I realize while doing these plans that I LOVE my bloggy friends!! I have gotten so many wonderful ideas from the blogging community, which is why I'm sharing the wonderful-ness!)

It's kind of a hodge-podge week...with themes and such.  I'm doing a lot of Election activities, and finishing up Halloween, with some Super-Hero things thrown in...I don't know how that happened, but I like it! ha!

Here is this week's center menu....

(all of these links are in the lesson plans when you download them,
click the pictures and it'll take you to the link!)
(freebie adjectives/inferencing activity!)

(this sight word activity is a freebie, although I realize you may not need the same words I'm doing this week - but maybe you can use it)

(freebie writing)

The writing activity is inspired by my friend Lori's writing activities - I have a few of her packs (because she's like the writing guru for K-2 in my humble opinion), so I asked her if I could use it for my Veteran themed writing, and she said SURE!
So make sure you go visit her and check out her PHENOM stuff!

(freebie adding tens)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So...
Let me do a recap of last week...
If you saw my LAST WEEK'S plans, things changed a little...
First off, we FINALLY finished bats!
Just LOOK at that circle map!!
To end it, they had to tell me at least 3 facts - USING correct punctuation and organization. UGH! My kids KNOW how to write a sentence, but when it comes to a paragraph??? They forget how and where to end a sentence!
They did AWESOME on their Monster comparison - and it was independent work at their centers! YES!
(Go to last week's post to get the freebie!)
Something I added to the mix was Kelley's Pumpkin adjectives...
I had every intention of making one myself, BUT, as I sat down to make it, I saw that she JUST posted hers...so I thought since she already did it, why not just use hers?? And it's FAB!
Here they are working in groups do describe their pumpkins (we had already done 2 together)
THEN, for the 4th pumpkin that they described, we read...
The Bumpy Little Pumpkin
FILLED with adjectives...
Then, they made their pumpkins (activity from Kelley's pack)
Not all of them are finished, I'll show more next week...
And we STARTED our Habitat activities
Here they are SILENTLY finding their habitat matches...
This week, they'll be designing their own habitat sale ad - FINALLY!
And I have to show you...
Last week, we went to the pumpkin patch with some of my Mommy friends...
WOWWY!!
Holy children, Batman!!!
lol - last year, almost everyone only had one kid...now everyone but one person has TWO kids...yikes!
and take a look at THIS cute pic!!
LOVE IT!!
Don't forget - today's the last day for the sale!!!
Look below to see all my friends who joined in on the fun!
